Back to School Night!

Back to School Night is Thursday, September 2nd from 5:00-7:00.

Back to School Night is virtual again this year, so no stress about getting up to campus after work! ❤️

There will be an all-school zoom at 5:00, followed by a grade-level zoom (5th) at 5:30.

Keep an eye out for a google form to submit questions. We will not have a lot of time to take questions from the chat. (Many parents will have other zooms to attend.)

Looking forward to seeing you all again! ðŸ˜Š

School Supply List

The 5th grade school supply list has been posted! Go HERE.

We have separate lists for Rooms 3, 13, and 14, but there are only minor differences. (You will be able to find out which room you are in at the Orientation Meeting on the 11th.)

The most important items are a reusable water bottle (water fountains will most likely be off limits) and a 3-subject spiral notebook. 5th graders have science three days a week! ❤️ Every student will have Life Science and Health with Isaac, Physical Science with Brandon, and Earth Science with me. The 3-subject spiral keeps all science work in one place.

It's almost time!

Hi 5th Grade Families!

As we think about starting a new year in-person, safety is our #1 priority.  Everyone on campus will be wearing masks, and LAUSD will be testing students and staff every week. Students will continue to be separated during lunch, as students will need to take their masks off to eat.

The best way for YOU to protect your child while they are at school is to make sure they have a good mask. We will have masks on campus -- in case straps break, etc -- but starting off with a good comfortable mask that fits well will make everything easier.

See you all soon!

In this unprecedented moment, encouraging kids to be creative and to think outside-of-the-box becomes even more important.

Levels of Engagement

We're starting the year fresh! Winter break was three long (glorious) weeks, but now we're ready to get back to work!

This week we discussed six different "levels of engagement", and came up with distance learning examples for each level.

Then students filled out a self-assessment of their pre-Winter Break level of engagement, and listed some ways they plan to make adjustments for the rest of the year.

They came up with some great strategies! Looking forward to a great second half of the year. ðŸ˜Š

Hi,
Sky Watchers!

Don't miss the Great Conjunction of 2020 on December 21st!

In space, Jupiter and Saturn are more than 400 million miles away from each other, but they will align in the night sky on Dec. 21 in an event astronomers call the "great conjunction" also referred to as the "Christmas Star" marking the planets' closest encounter in nearly 400 years.

There's been so much going on, I almost forgot that it's Computer Science Education Week!

Computer Science Education Week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).

This year it is December 7th-13th!

Traditionally, we "celebrate" with an Hour of Code.

I am planning to have students spend some time on coding activities tomorrow, but we'll only have time to try out a small fraction of the options. Here's the link for them to explore on their own:
